Our Team

The CardioCare team includes highly-trained nurses and friendly support staff as well as our cardiologists and cardiovascular specialists with international training and decades of experience. We proudly offer consultations, diagnostics and treatments in English, Spanish, German, Romanian and Russian, and provide only top-quality non-invasive or minimally-invasive procedures using world class technology. Two such procedures, performed by one of CardioCare's expert interventional cardiologists Dr. Jose Maria Hernandez Garcia, are the transcatheter aortic valve implantation, or TAVI, and MitraClip Therapy.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and MitraClip Therapy

A non-invasive alternative to open heart valve surgery, a transcatheter aortic valve implantation, more commonly known as a TAVI procedure, involves placing an artificial valve made from animal heart tissue into your aortic heart valve (located between the left ventricle and the aorta in the heart) in order to repair it and avoid serious heart complications, including heart failure. Similarly, MitraClip therapy uses the same non-invasive procedure to repair a damaged mitral valve (located between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart). Because they are non-invasive and non-surgical, complications following the procedure are significantly lower, recovery time is reduced, and pain and discomfort following the procedure is remarkably low compared to open heart surgery.

Dr. Jose Maria Hernandez Garcia

Renowned for his work in structural heart interventions, particularly the TAVI procedure and Mitraclip, Dr. Hernandez Garcia completed his medical studies from the University of Malaga in 1977 and specialist training in interventional cardiology in 1982. He has published more than a hundred scientific articles on interventional cardiology in magazines from around the world and has been the chief of interventional cardiology unit at the University Hospital Virgen de la Victoria in Malaga since 1996 where he specialises in structural heart disease and structural interventions, particularly minimally-invasive heart valve procedures.

Diagnosing Heart Valve Failure and Treating it with TAVI or MitraClip

A damaged aortic valve (aortic stenosis) or mitral valve (mitral valve stenosis) is a narrowing of the heart's aortic or mitral valve that can develop due to other heart conditions or naturally occur with age as the heart and the valve is used over time causing a build-up of calcium. When this happens, the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body, which can cause chest pain or make you feel breathless, tired, or dizzy, lowering your quality of life. In more than half of the cases of aortic or mitral stenosis, this hardening or thickening of the valve walls can cause heart failure and death within a year, so it's important to speak with your family doctor or a heart specialist if you're experiencing any of these symptoms so that they confirm an stenosis diagnosis and

discuss treatment options, like the TAVI procedure or MitraClip therapy, as necessary. At CardioCare cardiovascular centre in Marbella, we pride ourselves on providing clear answers to any questions you have or symptoms you are experiencing, so that you can leave every consultation with the answers you seek regarding yours or your loved one's heart health.
